La Hoya 47

01The place

Zuheros and the Sierra Subbética

A village of white lime on rock, within the Sierras Subbéticas Geopark: castle, cave, canyon and olive grove at the door of the house.

02The village

The village and the castle

Zuheros is white lime over grey rock. The streets climb, narrow and end at a viewpoint over the valley of olive groves.

The castle is three hundred metres from the house, set into the rock. In the evening you can hear swifts from the square, and the clock tower bells.

Underground

The Cueva de los Murciélagos (Bat Cave)

The cave is visited with a guide, entered on foot from the car park above. Inside there are stalactites, columns and cold, still air.

Inside there is an excavated prehistoric site, with human presence since the Neolithic. It is worth booking the visit before going up.

Walking

The Bailón canyon and the trails

The canyon path leaves from the village itself and descends between limestone walls. In winter and spring the river carries water and can be heard before it is seen.

You walk among holm oaks and Portuguese oaks, with vultures circling above. There is shade at the bottom of the canyon even in summer.

By bike

The Vía Verde de la Subbética

The old oil train route crosses the district without slopes, with tunnels, viaducts and stations turned into stops.

It can be done by bicycle or on foot, for whatever stretch you fancy. The entrance to the village lies below the track, on the plain of olive groves.

06The table

Cheese and oil

Zuheros goat cheese is made in the village and sold in the village. Cured, it tastes of the hills; fresh, of milk and salt.

The oil of the Subbética comes from the olive groves seen from the terrace. Bread, oil and cheese cover any meal in the house.
